Rangers Offseason Plan : 3 Simple Calls

Let’s start by saying what everyone knows: this team is FLAWED. It was built with no real direction and couldn’t help but fail with this collection of spare parts, playing out of position, and expected to excel. The fact that this club even sniffed the postseason is testament to the incredible talent of franchise cornerstone Henrik Lundqvist and an inspired first season on Broadway by sniper extraordinaire Marian Gaborik. Even with the huge holes that management could never fill despite making in-season moves and numerous call-ups from the minors, the team still strung together an impressive first month of the season and an exciting last few weeks to make a serious run at the final playoff spot. This team is not in need of a total rebuild and there shouldn’t be close to the wholesale turnover we saw at the end of last season but there are a few moves that GM Glen Sather must make if this team is going to make it back to the playoffs and actually be expected to make noise once it does.

Christopher Higgins rescues the Blueshirts.

Rangers 3 Bruins 2

In a game that saw the Rangers blow a two goal lead late after dominating most of the matchup, Christopher Higgins rescued the Blueshirts with a huge tally with just over a minute left to give them a 3-2 win tonight at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers are now 6-1-2 in their last 9 games. [...]

Gilroy headed to AHL.

Gilroy Sent to Minors

Earlier today, the Rangers made a surprising move when they sent rookie defenseman Matt Gilroy to the AHL. It was expected that Ilkka Heikkinen would be the odd man out with the return of Wade Redden from injury but the Blueshirts decided to keep the recent call up with the big club and send the [...]

Penguins 5 Rangers 2

The Rangers once again tried to ride a spectacular effort by Marian Gaborik to victory and once again were unsuccessful as they fell to the Pittsburgh Penguins for the second time in three nights 5-2 at MSG. Gaborik, who scored two goals to raise his league leading total to 21, was the only offense for [...]

Rangers 2 Senators 1 (Shootout)

The Rangers played only their second overtime game of the season and participated in their first shootout of the year today against Ottawa and when all was said and done P.A. Parenteau was the hero for the Blueshirts. Parenteau, who was called up for the second time this season from Hartford on Friday, beat Ottawa [...]

Flames 3 Rangers 1

The Blueshirts had one of their best performances of the season tonight but couldn’t overcome the loss of their top two centers and incredible goaltending by Mikka Kiprusoff during a hard fought and physical contest won by the Flames 3-1. Chris Drury left the game only 49 seconds in when Calgary’s Curtis Glencross blindsided him [...]

Canucks 4 Rangers 1

The Rangers caught a break in not facing All Star netminder Roberto Luongo on their visit to Vancouver but they were unable to find any rhythm on offense once again and couldn’t take advantage as the Canucks got a superb performance from Andrew Raycroft and beat the Blueshirts 4-1. In a game where the Canucks [...]

Rangers 4 Maple Leafs 1

“It’s Deja Vu all over again” said Yogi Berra famously and tonight the Rangers must have felt that way as they outplayed an over matched Toronto Maple Leafs squad for second time this week en route to their seventh straight victory. The Leafs battled early and showed some fight but couldn’t solve Henrik Lundqvist on [...]

Rangers 3 Ducks 0

Rangers 3 Ducks 0

Earlier today, the Ducks visited the Garden but the Rangers were the team that came out flying and never came down while dominating play on their way to a 3-0 shutout. From the opening puck drop, the Blueshirts attacked the Ducks with a relentless forecheck that kept the action in the Anaheim zone for most [...]

Rangers 4 Capitals 3

Rangers 4 Capitals 3

In a game that at times resembled a parade to the penalty box, the Rangers overcame a late one goal deficit to edge the Capitals 4-3 in D.C. earlier tonight. Marian Gaborik scored two late goals after Nicklas Backstrom put the Caps ahead with his second tally of the contest. Henrik Lundqvist had an uneven [...]
