Rangers Offseason Plan : 3 Simple Calls

Let’s start by saying what everyone knows: this team is FLAWED. It was built with no real direction and couldn’t help but fail with this collection of spare parts, playing out of position, and expected to excel. The fact that this club even sniffed the postseason is testament to the incredible talent of franchise cornerstone Henrik Lundqvist and an inspired first season on Broadway by sniper extraordinaire Marian Gaborik. Even with the huge holes that management could never fill despite making in-season moves and numerous call-ups from the minors, the team still strung together an impressive first month of the season and an exciting last few weeks to make a serious run at the final playoff spot. This team is not in need of a total rebuild and there shouldn’t be close to the wholesale turnover we saw at the end of last season but there are a few moves that GM Glen Sather must make if this team is going to make it back to the playoffs and actually be expected to make noise once it does.

Ryan Callahan scored twice to lead the Rangers to a 4-1 win.

Rangers 4 Senators 1

The Rangers began their post Olympic push for the playoffs, minus injured stars Marian Gaborik and Michael Del Zotto, by disposing of the Ottawa Senators 4-1 at Scotia Bank Place tonight. After falling behind 1-0, the Blueshirts roared back with a 4 goal second period keyed by Ryan Callahan, who scored twice. Henrik Lundqvist was [...]

Aaron Voros joins the party with his first goal of the season.

Rangers 8 Lightning 2

All the Rangers coaches were hoping for following their impressive 6-2 win over the Canadiens on Sunday was a repeat of the effort the team gave during that victory. Not only did they receive the same effort but the players took it to another level as they jumped on the Lightning early and controlled play [...]

Dan Girardi starts the rush vs. Atlanta.

Thrashers 2 Rangers 1 (SO)

After a dominating effort last night versus the Stars, the Rangers came back with an uneven performance and wasted an impressive debut by Chad Johnson while losing to the Thrashers in Atlanta by the score of 2-1 in a shootout. The Rangers, who allowed almost no odd man rushes last night, were victimized over and [...]

Penguins 8 Rangers 3

Here are the highlights from another terrible loss by the Rangers 8-3 to the Pittsburgh Penguins. This poor performance by the Blueshirts has to be the low point of the season as John Tortorella seems to be without any answers for his team’s lack of effort on defense and inability to score. Torts talks to [...]

Notes: Reunited…Will It Feel So Good?

The line of Vinny Prospal, Brandon Dubinsky and Marian Gaborik will be reunited tomorrow night in Edmonton as the Rangers face the Oilers. Coach Torts said he “liked the way the line played earlier this season” and wanted to give Artem Anisimov more minutes centering Ales Kotalik and Christopher Higgins. Enver Lisin, who missed last [...]

Dane Byers crashes the net vs. Boston

Practice Notes: Lisin Doubtful, Higgins On Top Line

Here are a few notes from today’s practice in preparation for tomorrow night’s contest vs. the Canucks in Vancouver: – Enver Lisin (who injured his foot in yesterday’s game) was not on the ice and is doubtful for tomorrow night. His foot was swollen and he couldn’t lace up his skate. “It feels worse today. [...]

Rangers 5 Coyotes 2

The Rangers snapped their 3 game losing streak with an economical performance against the Coyotes. Thumbs Up- Artem Anisimov (who scored the game’s first goal) once again looked very comfortable and played a strong game. Michael Del Zotto continues to defy logic and play like a veteran. The rookie point man has showed incredible confidence [...]

Practice Notes: Changes Galore, Going Back to MTL

After two straight losses, John Tortorella has decided it’s time to shake up the lineup. Not only did he switch up the lines (after juggling them throughout last night’s contest while unsuccessfully trying to find a spark) but he also changed up defense pairings as well. These were the lines at preactice today and should [...]

Enver Lisin Takes Flight vs. Bruins

More Minutes for Lisin, More Waiting on Higgins

At practice today, John Tortorella expressed a desire to get forward Enver Lisin more minutes. Lisin is expected to play wing on the third line with Artem Anisimov and Christopher Higgins in an attempt to get him more ice time as the coach has been very impressed with his play as of late. ““He’s still [...]
